Italy Day Two - Pompei and pizza making!

We did a tour of Pompei on our second day - we were driven on a bus to and from Sorrento, so we have some pictures of Sorrento from the bus. Our tour guide, Lulu, walked us around Pompei for about two hours and yet we only saw about 10% of it! It is VAST!! The kids made it through mostly because Lulu gave them the job of helping her with her flag. These pictures are not in any particular order because some were taken by me, some by Avery and some by Carlton (Gavin took some but chose to delete all of them). Let me start with pictures of Vesuvius from our hotel!

Entrance to Pompei

We saw at least 3 different cats while we walked around Pompei.

Carlton did a short video of the large plaza of Pompei:

The kids got to take turns holding the flag during the tour. They were thrilled to have the job and it kept them from complaining of being bored or tired!

Bathhouse

After the bathhouse we walked around and saw a Noble's house, different shops, "fast food" restaurants, a bakery and.....the brothel.

One of the roads through Pompei, here you can see the grooves worn into the stone by chariots.

"Fast food" resturant above and first "Beware of dog" sign to the left.
Noble's house looking through a room to the Spring side of the house with a garden.

Part of winter side of the house with a Satyr in the middle of a fountain.

There were three preserved bodies on display at Pompei. Other bodies were moved to a museum in Naples along with many other artifacts.

This was a crosswalk to get across the street. Normally the street was reserved for chariots because they also had sewage running down the street. So they had "sidewalks" on either side of the street and these stone walkways to get to the other side of the street.

This was the bakery with a large oven.

Long row of shops.

One of many fountains in the city where people could get water.
Inside the brothel was a "menu" that patrons could select from. Our tour guide said it was the first McDonald's because of othe kids (instead of the first brothel), but that made them more interested!

These pictures were above the doorways, so I don't think the kids even noticed them!

On to pizza making!! We went to a farm outside of Sorrento with about 15 other people. They had a long table set up where we each had a plate with flour. We had to make our own dough with the flour, fresh yeast, oil and water. Once we had our ball of dough made, they took them to be used another time. The dough has to sit for 24 hours before being used. So we used dough from a previous group.

Here is video of each of the kids tossing their dough into the air to stretch it.

The pizzas were made with fresh yeast that the farm got from beer they brewed. The sauce was made from tomatoes they grew. The cheese was made from milk they got from their cows! Everything was fresh and SO good!! The pizza oven is 700 inside, so the pizzas only cook for about 90 seconds.

Video of Carlton and I tossing our pizza dough!

The pizza was served with red wine made from the grapes grown on the farm and the kids had cherry juice that was also fresh!

The final picture is a group photo with Nigel and Belinda, a couple that we met at the pizza making experience! It was a very fun evening!
