We did a walking tour that covered the Forums, Palatine Hill and the Colosseum. Lots of walking!! The tour was over 2 hours long and there was so much to see. The guide was very well informed but we could not keep up with all the information he was spouting during the tour! Too many names and dates to keep track of while trying to take in all the sights as we walked. Here are some pictures:
This is Trajan's Column completed in 113 AD to commemorate Roman Emperor Trajan's victory in the Dacian wars. The column has pictures all around it depicting the wars - it is about 98 feet tall but 115 feet tall including the pedestal and 12 feet in diameter. The frieze (bas relief pictures) wind around the column 23 times. The inside also has a spiral staircase with 185 steps to the top viewing deck.
Antoninus and Faustina Temple which Emperor Antoninus Pius dedicated to his deceased and deified wife, Faustina the Elder. Upon his death, Antoninus was deified and the Temple was rededicated to both in 161 AD.
Temple of Vesta dedicated to the Goddess of Fire.
Left and below: This was the House of the Vestal Virgins with these statues made for the Virgins.
The excavation/restoration continues.
Septimius Severus Arch made of marble and erected in 203AD.
Stairs down to dinner after our long day! We found a great restaurant called Trattoria al Tettarello which we had time to try a second time during our stay!
